Lab 8 Chapter 6 Biodiversity

Materials-
  1. Slides, living materials, preserved materials
  2. Lab handout with tables of information and descriptive definitions/in-depth analysis  of all Bacteria, Protista, Plants, Fungi
  3. Microscope 

Exercises- 
  1. Study all biological specifications pertaining to all Bacteria, Protista, Plants, Fungi
  2. Recognize representatives of the major groups, know the major morphological features of each group, know very basic ecology of each group Bacteria, Protista,  Plants, Fungi.

Chapter 5---

Materials-

  1. All materials used to build a Rebop including Styrofoam and a variety of push pins 
  2. Data collection sheet
  3. Web page

Exercises-
  1. Study the relationship between genotype and phenotype bu building fictional organisms called Rebops based on genes selected randomly from a gene pool. 
  2. Build rebops based on genetic information chooses from chromosomes 
  3. Find the parents of your Rebop among other Rebops 
  4. Mate Rebops
  5. Study human chromosomes

Chapter 9---

Materials-
  1. For Part 1, pro cell elctrophoresis apparatus, gel molds, combs, Power units, buffer and gels 
  2. For Part 2, Protein production through Transcription and translation

Excersies- 
  1. Perform starch gel electrophoresis which compare the hemoglobin of homozygous dominate that separates the molecules based on their electric charge and or molecular weight under the influence of an electric field

Lab 6 Biological Chemicals, Nutrition and Health

Materials-

  1. Carbohydrates (test tube racks, hot plate, 400 ml beaker, 3 test tubes, onion juice, potato juice, etc.)
  2. Fats and Lipids (Sudan III, extracts of flour, cream. coconut  ,margarine, filter paper, pencils, dedicated Pasteur Pipet, etc.)
  3. Proteins (Biuret's Agent, egg white, chicken broth, etc.)
  4. Common foods (pancake syrup, ground coffee, honey, etc.)
  5. Digital Blood Pressure Monitor

Exercises- 
  1. Test for proteins, carbohydrates and fats in foods

Exercises-

  1. Observe the complex process of cellular reproduction which results in the exact duplication of of daughter cells by the blueprint of the parent cell
  2. Identify interphase and the stages of the mitosis on onion root tip

  • Investigate how energy from the sun is trapped by plants 
  • Investigate how chemicals involved in photosynthesis  enter and leave the plant by examining slides of the leaves
